Edward Green; Square or round toed lasts for Derby/Bluchers

Postby Leather man » Mon Feb 08, 2010 8:30 pm

Had what for was me a confusing conversation with the Edward Green shop. I've just ordered one of their new Autumn 2009 styles and asked about lasts. I was told they only come on one last. My order, Wells, a Derby/Blucher, comes on the 82 last - a sleek round toed last.

I was told that Derbys only suit round toed lasts and on pressing my question further was told that the 888 last only suits shoes with a fairly smooth, unpatterned front , or a sleek looking oxford with subdued patterning like Inverness.

I am rather bewildered as I have always thought the 888 last ( a smart square toed last) suits semi - brogued Derbys very well.

What do others think? Do you agree with the shop or do you have other views. I am told its all about asthetic balance.

If Tom Parks reads this I'd REALLY appreciate your view Tom. I was wanting to order Elmsley on 888 later in the year but am now unsure.

Thanks everyone in advance
